A tiny Park Road deli is drawing crowds with massive New York-style sandwiches, chopped cheeses and some combinations you probably won't find anywhere else in Charlotte.

🍴 THE QUICK BITE

What: Mochi's Deli
Where: 2216 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28203
Neighborhood: Dilworth Crossing
The move: Come hungry, order a hero and don't expect a dainty sandwich.
Good to know: This is primarily a grab-and-go operation, and the crowds have already found it.

There are sandwiches.

And then there are sandwiches that require you to figure out how you're actually going to take the first bite.

Mochi's Deli is firmly in the second category.

The new spot at Dilworth Crossing on Park Road is bringing a little bit of New York deli and bodega culture to Charlotte with big, stacked sandwiches made fresh to order.

And judging by the crowds, Charlotte was ready for it.

Recent local coverage has documented customers packing the small shop, with demand at times becoming heavy enough that online ordering has had to be paused.

That's a pretty good problem to have when you've only been open since July.

THE SANDWICHES ARE THE STORY

Mochi's describes what it's doing pretty simply: New York City flavor, big stacked sandwiches and everything made fresh to order.

But the menu goes considerably further than your standard turkey-and-cheese deli counter.

There are classic cold cuts.

There are New York-style chicken cutlet sandwiches.

There are chopped cheeses.

And then Mochi's starts playing around.

You'll find sandwiches inspired by flavors like bulgogi and pho sitting alongside chicken cutlets, Italian-style sandwiches and straight-up New York comfort food.

🥪 WHAT'S ON THE MENU?

The menu is divided into a few different lanes:

NY Chopped Cheeses
The New York bodega staple gets several variations, built around chopped beef, melted cheese and plenty of toppings.

NY Chicken Cutlets
Crispy chicken cutlets get stacked with everything from mozzarella and pesto to bacon, ranch and Caesar-inspired toppings.

Asian-Inspired Sandwiches
This is where Mochi's gets especially interesting, with creations incorporating flavors like bulgogi and pho.

Cold Cuts
For anyone who wants to keep things traditional, there are deli classics including Italian sandwiches and turkey clubs.

Build Your Own
Or ignore the rules and build the monster sandwich you actually want.

AND YES, THEY'RE BIG

The photo probably tells you most of what you need to know.

These aren't sandwiches built around restraint.

They're messy, stacked and designed to make you reconsider whether you really needed fries.

Mochi's offers sandwiches on a smaller round roll or as a larger hero, depending on just how serious you are about lunch.

One of the most interesting things about the place, though, isn't simply the size.

It's the combination of familiar and unexpected.

You can walk in craving the kind of chopped cheese you'd expect from a New York bodega and walk out with a sandwich inspired by Korean bulgogi or Vietnamese pho.

That makes Mochi's feel less like a Charlotte restaurant trying to recreate a New York deli and more like a sandwich shop using that tradition as its starting point.

🔥 CLT FORK FIRST-TIMER GAME PLAN

If you want the New York experience:
Start with one of the chopped cheeses.

If you're a chicken cutlet person:
This is your place. The menu has an entire section devoted to them, including the Chicken Italiano with mozzarella, pesto spread, arugula, roasted red peppers and balsamic glaze.

If you want something different:
Head toward the Asian-inspired sandwiches. The bulgogi and pho-inspired options are where Mochi's really separates itself from the typical deli menu.

If you're really hungry:
Get the hero.

If you're not:
Maybe don't get the hero.

THE WORD IS ALREADY OUT

Mochi's isn't exactly Charlotte's best-kept secret anymore.

Axios Charlotte recently reported that the shop has been drawing large crowds, while other local food coverage has described people lining up before opening and potentially waiting 20 minutes or longer for made-to-order sandwiches.

That's worth knowing before you go.

This isn't a giant restaurant built to move hundreds of people through a dining room.

It's a small, mostly grab-and-go deli.

So if you show up during the lunch rush and see a crowd, you've been warned.

But there's also something refreshing about a restaurant getting attention for something this simple.

No elaborate dining room.

No tasting menu.

No complicated pitch.

Just really big sandwiches.

THE CLT FORK TAKE

Charlotte has plenty of places to get a sandwich.

What makes Mochi's interesting is that it isn't trying to make another perfectly respectable lunch sandwich.

It's leaning into the kind of oversized, slightly ridiculous, sauce-running-down-your-hand sandwich that becomes the reason you go somewhere in the first place.

Then it throws bulgogi, pho-inspired combinations and other twists into the mix.

And Charlotte seems to be responding.

If the early crowds are any indication, Mochi's may have found a pretty simple formula:

Make a great sandwich. Make it huge. And give people something worth telling their friends about.
